sinensis ![]() |
Description Miscanthus is a group of ornamental grasses that make excellent perennials. They are clump forming plants with reed-like stems and leaves that are narrow and arch to the ground. The flower heads are puffy plumes that form in late summer to fall and make good cut or dried flowers. Most species are moderately frost hardy. Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' make a great conversation piece in the garden with it's horizontal golden stripes, giving it the common name of Zebra Grass. 'Strictus' is another cultivar that looks very similar; only the 'Zebrinus' has a more arching growth habit compared to the more upright habit of 'Strictus'. This grass continues to put a show on in the fall with copper colored feathery blooms in early fall and a foliage change from green to golden later in the fall. A great grass for specimen or mass plantings, reaching 4' tall, flowers growing 2' above the foliage. Like many grasses Zebra Grass prefers a well-drained soil. Hardiness: USDA Zones
