Metasequoia glyptostroboides - Dawn Redwood

Description

Metasequoia glyptostroboides is a native from China that was thought to be extinct, don't worry it was rediscovered in the 1940's. The Dawn Redwood is a beautiful tree that is very reminiscent of the Bald Cypress or Taxodium distichium, which makes sense since they are in the same family of plants. This Redwood can reach 70-130' tall at maturity with a 15' or more spread. This tree has both deciduous and non-deciduous shoots. The leaves are bright green, soft to the touch, and needle-like, these will turn a nice bronze color in the fall. Cones can be either light brown and female or long spherical and male. Metasequoia glyptostroboides prefers a well drained soil with regular water. This is not a good tree for dry areas or coastal areas as the foliage will burn from dry heat and salt.
