| Leucophyllum frutescens ![]() |
Description Leucophyllum frutescens 'Compactum' is slow growing with a dense growth habit, only reaching 3-5' tall with a 3-5' spread. This is a great shrub for dry chalky soils, in fact Texas Sage will tolerate wind, heat, drought, and salt. This shrub, however, is not good for areas with high rainfall or high humidity. Compact Texas will flower from late spring until fall, usually after rain, hence its other common name of Barometer Bush. The flowers are pink and bell-shaped and contrast nicely with the silvery-gray foliage. This shrub shears well and can be used as hedges, in mass plantings, and in containers, as long as the site has good drainage. Hardiness: USDA Zones
8-9, AHS Zones 8-12
