Pyrus calleryana
'Bradford'
Ornamental Pear

Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford' - Ornamental Pear

Description

The Ornamental Pear is a deciduous narrow conical tree growing broader with age, thornless and produces no edible fruit. The Bradford Pear grows in a classic "lollipop fashion" making it a popular choice for some landscape plantings. Also it has a high tolerance to the city conditions. This tree does not have a central leader which can lead to breakage if not trimmed properly. The Bradford Pear was selected and introduced around 1950 by the USDA. This selection profusely blooms in late winter to early spring, bringing the landscape some of the first splashes of color with its white flowers. Ornamental Pear leaves are slightly scalloped or toothed with a glossy, dark green color which turns to a more gold-orange or red-mahogany in late autumn. Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford' can grow to be 50 feet in height and 40 foot in width, which is bigger than many people imagine it can get.
