Description The Japanese Camellia has soil requirements that are similar to that of Azaleas, acidic and well drained, and are not very tolerant of salty soils. The foliage is dark glossy green with thick leathery leaves. The main attraction of Japanese Camellias is the winter flowers. Camellia japonica 'Mathotiana' has extremely large formal double red blooms with loose crimson petals sometimes with purplish cast. Mathotiana Camellia is a mid to late season bloomer and has a vigorous, upright growth habit. Camellia japonica 'Mathotiana' is also known as Julia Drayton. Hardiness: USDA Zones
